February 1st, 2002 Bob - More screencaps and SMSS DVD1 review

I actually got these done a while ago, it's just I've been so busy lately that I haven't had a chance to post them. Screen caps have been posted for episodes 97 - 102 in the Series section so go check those out if you wish.

In other news, I picked up the Sailor Moon SuperS DVD a few days ago. While I haven't watched the whole thing yet (I've actually only watched about 1 1/2 episodes) I'll give you my review.

The packaging, in my opinion, is very nice. Once again, Pioneer gives us the double sided covers with clear case and insert. A nice touch is that the insert this time is actually a fold out poster of the reverse cover art. Also, unlike the S series, where on the spine "Sailor Moon" was in gold foil, on the SuperS DVDs, the background of the spine is in gold foil and the writing itself is not. This gives a nice distinction between the S and SuperS DVDs. Dan pointed out one drawback of the new packaging. On the spine, there is a small "circle picture" thing that in the S and movie DVDs, went towards the bottom, while on the SuperS DVDs it's at the top. This makes it so that the S and SuperS DVDs don't line up and clash each other if put next to each other. This however is a minor thing and overall, the packaging was very well done.

The menus were also well done. While the same concept was used, short animation to change between menus, etc, everything else was redone. While the whole S series' menus were very similar, the SuperS ones are very different. A nice touch that differentiates the SuperS DVDs with the S ones.

The extras is where this DVD really lacks. I was hoping for a Sailor Gallery of the outer senshi, but alas, the only extra was the original OP used for the first half of SuperS with Kanji. It seems as if Pioneer is really not trying in this department.

The episodes themselves seem somewhat well-done. The 2nd OP is used instead of the first because the 2nd OP was the only one that came in a "no-kanji" version. They also used the right EP, Watashi-tatchi ni naritakute, which was good. They also put the credits in the right spot, unlike in the S EPs, so that was also good. While the translation was for the most part, on, they made one big error. In episode 2 of the DVD, Fish Eye is referred to as a woman in the translation. BIG MISTAKE. Now, I know this confused a lot of you, so let me tell you, Fish Eye is a GUY. Don't let the shoddy translation fool you. You'll see for a fact that Fish Eye is a guy in an upcoming episode, so trust me, he _IS_ male. This mistake is unforgivable in my book, but luckily, it's one of the only downfalls of the DVD.

So go out and buy those DVDs! I know they messed up big time with the Fish Eye thing, but it's still good to support Pioneer. Oh yeah, almost forgot, cover art!
